The biodiversity of this zone rivals anything in the country. The area that attracts the most tourists is Tortuguero. Surrounded by a network of canals, Tortuguero is home to hundreds of species of birds, mammals and marine life. And then there are the turtles. Several species of sea turtles come to nest along the beaches of Tortuguero each year and this area is one of the most important for the nesting of the highly endangered Green Sea Turtles that nest during the period of July through September. Most people travel to Tortuguero on an all-inclusive package that includes transportation from San Jose, meals, tours of the canals and (if the season is right) turtle watching. The lodges that are listed below all offer such all-inclusive packages and this is our recommended way of visiting Tortuguero. Further to the north is the vast nature refuge of Barra del Colorado (largest such refuge in Costa Rica) that features rugged and untamed wilderness and some of the best Tarpon fishing on the planet.
