The Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica marches to the beat of a different drummer. It has a unique climate and certainly a unique culture. Some of the most beautiful and tranquil beaches are those of Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Cocles and Manzanillo. The National Park of Cahuita rivals Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific both for the beauty of its white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, and the wide variety of wildlife one can see in the park.
The predominant culture of this area is largely due to the influence of Jamaican immigrants who were brought as slaves to work on the railroad that linked the Pacific and Caribbean coasts and used primarily to transport bananas from plantations to the port of Limon. English is spoken widely. This area gives new meaning to the term laid back and is full of good vibes and good times.
