Okay I am sure anyone who might actually be reading this stuff is thinking, now your stretching it Costa Rica Guy! San Jose traffic has to rival anything in the world, in negative terms. Maybe there are not as many cars on the road as say New York City, but the condition of the roads here easily makes up for that. It is horrendous and maddening, if viewed from that dark, foreboding and cynical mindset. I recently read a great book by Susan Jeffers entitled Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway (see Susan Jeffers web site). As Jack Canfield puts it so bluntly, “this book should be recommended for anyone who can read.” Jeffers, who hails from a big U.S. city, has a refreshing viewpoint about being stuck in traffic. She says that she loves the traffic because when stuck in traffic it is the only time she can do absolutely nothing without feeling guilty about it. What an interesting thought. I guess the reason I am listing San Jose traffic as reason #18 for why I love Costa Rica is to help me get into that same positive mindset. Being stuck in traffic is a great opportunity to do positive things like listen to motivational Cd’s or music, learn a new language, or catch up on phone calls that need to be returned (well that last one is against the law here, so maybe not such a good idea). And in San Jose there is no end to the amusing sites and sounds that you can hone in on that can put a smile on your face, if one is so inclined, to smile that is. San Jose is my home. I love it and traffic is just a part of it, always will be. I guess these words I am writing this morning reflect that I am learning a little patience living in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was not that long ago when being stuck in San Jose traffic more or less would ruin my entire day and cloud my whole opinion about the place. Now I just turn on the radio to My Favorite Latin Music channel and put a big smile on my face. It also helps to be nice to others and traffic jams always afford that opportunity as well, even to be nice to those who are not so inclined to return the favor. Ahhhh, San Jose traffic….just another one of those little things that I love about Costa Rica.
