Imperial has got to be the “coolest” brand in the world. The fact that it is THE NUMBER ONE beer in Costa Rica (the coolest country on earth) and the really cool label with the phoenix rising and pura vida and all….I mean come on, it is the coolest without a doubt. It is also refreshing that there is no place you can go in Costa Rica, not even the deepest darkest jungle, where you will not find three things…..a soccer field of some sort, a bus stop and a bar with an Imperial sign hanging. After driving for hours on teeth and brain rattling roads chauffeuring tourists from one place to another, that sign is what you call R-O-L-A-I-D-S (that spells “relief” for those of you old enough to remember). We do have some other brands, such as Pilsen, Bavaria and Rock Ice, but Imperial is the best and the offical beer of the greatest fútbol team (soccer for you gringos) on earth….San Jose’s own Saprissa! The other guys (the La Liga fans) drink Pilsen and the other lesser brands. Much to the amusement of many from the North, down here we like our Imperial in a glass full of ice. Why you ask? Because that’s the way we do it…..that’s why. No need for further explanation. It just don’t get no better than a cold Imperial (on ice) and a plate of chicharones from Cacique Aseri (the best chicharones in Costa Rica, but that is for a future post). I love Imperial and I love chicharones and I’ve got the belly to prove it! Costa Rica is a fun place to live. Imperial is a fun beer and another in this long and growing list of reasons I love Costa Rica. As we say…..salud!
