I wanted to mention a really cool app that I downloaded to my Iphone the other day. You might know that I am into the whole biodiversity and sustainability thing from my blog, Costa Rica Guy. I am always on the lookout for opportunities to learn about nature and especially to identify species of flora and fauna. Yahaira, the other author on our Package Costa Rica blog, is way ahead of my since she studied that stuff and was a naturalist guide for years. So, when she rights about Costa Rica biodiversity, you should listen!
Well learning just got a little easier with the Touit Iphone app from INBio. INBio is Costa Rica’s National Institute for the study of biodiversity. They actually have a park in Santo Domingo de Heredia. If you ever are stuck in San Jose for the day with nothing to do, go there! It is amazing and you will learn tons. Well, now they bring their park right into your Iphone with this app. The Touit Iphone app gives lots of cool info and photos about tons of Costa Rica flora and fauna.
Oh why the name? Yahaira informs me that TOUIT is the genus of a particular bird, the Periquito alirrojo (red-fronted parrotlet in English). This is an endemic species to Costa Rica, meaning it doesn’t naturally exist anywhere else. It is also a species under threat of extinction and protected by Costa Rica law, as are many of the species here.
Just thought I would let you know about the Touit Iphone app. Download it and when you come on your Costa Rica Vacation, see how many of the species you can identify. The app is in Spanish and English. Species are updated constantly.
